Mr Man’s Chinese restaurant Wollaton Park

Beautiful restaurant at the edge of magnificent Wollaton Park just a few miles from the centre of Nottingham. This is a Chinese and Malaysian restaurant where the food and the service is excellent.

The restaurant is very large and caters for large groups and families with conversation-friendly round tables. The waiting staff are knowledgeable and efficient and will help you to choose the dishes just right for you. There’s also no shame in asking for a knife and fork if you’re not too good with chopsticks!

Despite the grandeur of the surroundings the prices are reasonable for such delicious food.

Midland Railex model railway exhibition

This takes place on 18th – 19th August 2012 at the Midland Railway Butterley in Derbyshire.

There will be more than 200 layouts as well as model railway society and trade stands.

Heritage as well as diesel trains are operating and all the standard gauge journeys are included in the entry price of £10 for adults, £5 for children with concession and family tickets on offer.

The Golden Valley Narrow Gauge railway will also be in operation.

Papplewick Pumping Station

A beautifully restored original Victorian pumping station which houses twin beam engines built by James Watt in 1884.

The building was apparently never intended to be seen by the public yet boasts stained glass windows, ornately decorated columns and beautiful mahogany and brass.

Steam days are most Bank Holidays and there is an Experience Steam event where you can try your hand at firing a Lancashire boiler and operating a Beam engine. You need to book in advance for this.

Children are catered for with a woodland play area and miniature railway. there is also a cafe and gift shop as well as picnic areas.

Crich Tramway Village

A day out at the Tramway Village in the heart of Derbyshire offers a great time to all the family. The village has cobble stones, overhead wires and period shops and places to eat. You can have unlimited rides on the trams and admire the magnificent views over the Derwent valley or have a look round the museum and workshops to learn of the history of travel by tram.

There is a Woodland Park which has a bandstand and sculpture trail as well as a playground and picnic area.

There are many special events taking place from a 1940s weekend in August, classsic vehicle days and a British holday weekend to celebrate the Jubilee.

Full details are on the tramway website

Heroes and Villains tour of Nottingham

Bringing history to life around the landmarks of Nottingham including Nottingham Castle, Brewhouse Yard, the old Market Square, Shire Hall and the Lace Market.

Your costumed guide will explore the myths and legends of Nottingham’s characters whilst you are taken around the areas they frequented.  Tours last 2 hours and expect to walk about 2 miles.

Nottingham Ghost Walks

Follow your fully costumed and in character guide around the haunted pubs, caves and alleyways whilst learning of their spooky heritage. Tours start at the Salutation Inn, one of the oldest pubs in Nottingham. Pre booking is not always needed unless you are a large group. Walks take place every Sat at 7pm from the Salutation Inn Maid Marian Way in the city centre.

Wollaton Hall and Deer Park

Enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Wollaton Park including close up sightings of the resident deer, the lake, the formal gardens and the cast iron glasshouse.

Have a go at riding a segway. After some initial instruction and practice have a jaunt around the lake on these strange vehicles. Available on the last Sunday of each month, £10 for a 30 minute tour.

Check out the industrial museum to remind you of the rich and plentiful industry that Nottingham is famous for – Raleigh bicycles, Boots the chemist, communications and of course Nottingham lace.

Wollaton Hall itself has had a big clean up in recent years and houses the natural history museum. Let the kids gaze at the animal exhibits and the creepy crawlies in the insect room whilst you admire the period rooms which show the interiors of times gone by.

There is also a cafe in the courtyard which serves hot and cold food.

Live music events during the summer months are also popular – see website for details.

Ye Olde Bridge Inn Oxton

Just outside Mansfield the Olde Bridge Inn is a beautifully refurbished family run pub which serves delicious and inexpensive food. I visited recently with a group of friends at lunchtime and we were all impressed by the friendly service and particularly the 2 meals for £10 offer.

There is a function room, conference room and a safe outside play area for children.

There’s also plenty of seating outside for the summer months

Calke Abbey

Just 9 and a half miles south of Derby this faded country house estate has something for everyone with year round events such as food fairs, craft fairs, tea dances and cinema screenings.

There are guided tours of the buildings or you can explore the grounds and gardens. There’s also a restaurant, coffee shop and gift shop.
